Much of the state woke up to a chilly morning today, Dec. 12, and the constant east-northeast wind will keep the temperatures cool throughout the day, according to the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service. A cold front sweeping through the interior and Southwest Florida today is expected to bring a temporary blast of cooler air in those regions.

Overnight lows will be back in the high-30s and 40s in North Florida, the 50s in Central and Southwest, and the 60s and higher down South, forecasters said.

The rain is gone, but the east-northeast wind will keep roaring through the weekend with gusts up to 20-30 mph in Central and South Florida and approaching 40 mph Friday night around West Palm Beach, forecasters said. Rain is expected to return up and down the east coast Friday afternoon and evening.

Elsewhere, an Arctic blast is blowing in behind the cold front that swept up the East coast, threatening the Midwest and Northeast U.S. with brutally cold weather, feet of lake-effect snow in the Great Lakes region and wind chills as low as 35 below zero in Minnesota.

But the weather is expected to calm down by Christmas, AccuWeather forecasters said.

“Following the conclusion of the Arctic blast to end this week, relatively mild conditions are in store up to around Christmastime for much of the Central and Eastern states,” AccuWeather said Wednesday.
