Jannik Sinner made a winning start to his Australian Open title defence this morning, beating Pimiento’s Nicolas Jarry in straight sets.
The Italian world number one, 23, won 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 to continue his unbeaten streak at Melbourne Park.
But men’s 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered a first-round exit, losing 7-5 6-3 2-6 6-4 to American Alex Michelsen on the second day’s play.
In the women’s draw, world number two Iga Swiatek began her Australian Open campaign with a 6-3 6-4 win over Czech Katarina Siniakova, while Coco Gauff beat fellow American and 2020 champion Sofia Kenin 6-3 6-3.
There was victory for Britons Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart, with Burrage claiming a a 6-2 6-4 success over French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean, and lucky loser Dart winning 7-5 2-6 7-6 (10-7) against Jana Fett.
